Barack H. Obama, Moon Tower among possible names for Austin schools with ties to Confederacy

Austin ISD in February voted to rename five Austin schools with names that linked back to the Confederacy.

AUSTIN — Austin ISD on Wednesday released a list of names that could be coming to existing schools in the district. This after the board voted in February to rename five of its schools with names that tie back to the Confederacy

Those schools include Reagan High School, Lanier High School, Fulmore Middle School

Eastside Memorial High School at the Johnston campus, and John T. Allan facility.

According to the schools' naming committees, here are their finalists:

Allan Renaming Committee:

1. Anita Ferrales Coy

2. abstain

3. abstain

Fulmore Renaming Committee:

1. Sarah Beth Lively

2. Moon Tower

3. South Congress (SoCo)

Lanier Renaming Committee:

1. North Central

2. Diana H. Castañeda

3. Lanier (no first name)

Reagan Renaming Committee:

1. Reagan (no first name)

2. Barack H. Obama

3. Northeast

Eastside members asked for an extension of time for renaming the school, a spokesperson for Austin ISD said.
