Video shows suspect wiping blood off car after hit-and-run in North Austin, police say

Austin police said the victim suffered from life-threatening injuries including four broken ribs, a broken scapula, a broken pelvis, a dislocated shoulder and serious head trauma.

AUSTIN — A man has been arrested after he was allegedly caught on camera wiping blood off of his car after being involved in a hit-and-run in North Austin, an arrest affidavit said.

According to court documents obtained by KVUE, police responded to 5610 North Interstate Highway 35 where they found a victim in a puddle of blood with several broken car pieces nearby.

Police said the victim was hit by a vehicle.

The victim was taken to the Dell Seton Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, according to an affidavit. Police said the victim suffered from four broken ribs, a broken scapula, a broken pelvis, a dislocated shoulder and serious head trauma.

According to police, they found a damaged vehicle in a hotel parking lot near the scene. Police said they viewed the hotel's surveillance video and saw the suspect inspect the damage to his car and wipe the blood off of it.

Police were able to identify the suspect as Zachary Peterson, 51. Peterson allegedly told police he knew he hit something on the road, but didn't know what it was.

Peterson has been charged with failure to stop and render aid and his bond is set at $50,000. According to online records, Peterson is in police custody as of Wednesday afternoon.
