AUSTIN — A suspect has been arrested after he was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run accident that caused a man to lose his right leg.

According to the Austin Police Department, on Friday at 5:42 p.m., officers responded to a crash in the 2400 block of East Riverside Drive. Police said they received a report that a vehicle hit a man at a bus stop.

Police said when they arrived on scene, they found the elderly victim with severe injuries and that his right leg had been "cut off" due to the crash. Police reportedly found the suspect's unoccupied car at the scene. Police said two witness saw the crash and told officers they saw the suspect leave the scene, but took photos of him.

According to an arrest affidavit, police were able to identify the suspect as Dipak Thapa, 19.


Police said Thapa was traveling eastbound on East Riverside Drive when he jumped the curb and hit the victim, who was sitting on a bus stop bench.

Police suspect Thapa was intoxicated during the crash. Blood results are pending, according to the affidavit.

Thapa has been charged with intoxication assault and accident involving serious bodily injury with bonds set at $250,000 each. According to online records, Thapa is in police custody as of Sunday afternoon.
