Austin Fire Department raising money for 'Fill the Boot' campaign

Close to 1,000 Austin firefighters are expected to volunteer to collect money alongside roads to fund muscular dystrophy research.

AUSTIN, Texas — It's a busy weekend for Austin firefighters.

Friday, the Austin Fire Department kicked off their "Fill the Boot" campaign, which will run through Sunday.

Close to 1,000 Austin firefighters are expected to volunteer to collect money alongside roads to fund muscular dystrophy research.

But while the donation drive is important, Chief Joel Baker wants to remind drivers to be careful.

"Watch the firefighters out and about," Chief Baker said. "They're going to be walking in and out of traffic, so just be cautious of the firefighters."

In 2018, the Austin Fire Department raised about $63,000 with the "Fill the Boot" campaign.
