Fresenius Health Partners cutting 121 jobs in Austin

Fresenius Health Partners said it "has decided to reduce its operations" at its facility located at 3711 S. MoPac Expressway.

AUSTIN, Texas — Fresenius Health Partners, a health care company that provides dialysis services, is laying off 121 employees in Austin, according to documents filed with the state. The job cuts will be effective May 31.

KVUE's partners at the Austin American-Statesman report that Fresenius didn't provide a specific reason for the Austin cuts in its recent WARN letter to the Texas Workforce Commission, only saying that it "has decided to reduce its operations" at its facility located at 3711 S. MoPac Expressway. The office won't be closed entirely, the Statesman reports.

A WARN letter, which stands for Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, is a federally-required notice that employers must provide to state governments 60 days in advance of plant closures or major layoffs. The WARN Act is intended to offer protection to workers.

The Statesman reports that Fresenius's Germany-based corporate parent, Fresenius Medical Care, announced a plan in late February to cut costs globally and streamline its operating model. It isn't clear if the Austin job cuts are related to that effort.

Fresenius Medical Care had previously said it is anticipating "significant negative impact on 2021 net income" because of the toll the COVID-19 pandemic has been taking on patients with advanced kidney disease, in terms of increased deaths, the Statesman reports.
