Williamson County Commissioners approve $72M for city water, wastewater infrastructure

This drop in the bucket will help local cities get started on major projects.

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas — Williamson County leaders know they cannot slow down the growth they're experiencing.

"We're seeing so much growth, you know, developing the water or the wastewater, it's expensive, takes some planning," Commissioner Russ Boles said.

Boles grew up and lives in Round Rock, one of the fastest-growing cities in the country.

"It was a small community and we relied on a well, and the well ran out and it failed. And when you run out of water, there's a variety of things that that concern you," Boles said. "From that time, Round Rock has been working on their water."

Commissioners approved $72.5 million from the remaining American Rescue Plan funds to go toward water and wastewater treatment projects. The court decided on 15 projects specifically all across the county in towns and cities of varying size.

Boles added that the money will help some of these cities jump start their infrastructure so they don't play catchup later.

"Some cities have planned better. Some cities have planned less. Some cities are just now getting into that," Boles said. "It's giving us a chance to have that conversation that we all need to start keeping that, you know, keeping an eye on that."

According to the County, the money had to be earmarked by the end of 2024 and construction for each project must finish by the end of 2026.
