Tesla officially moves corporate headquarters to new Austin Gigafactory

The electric car maker joins a growing list of companies relocating to the area from Silicon Valley.

AUSTIN, Texas — Telsa has officially moved its headquarters to Austin.

The electric vehicle company filed an 8-K form on Wednesday with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to relocate its corporate headquarters to the site of its Gigafactory at 13101 Harold Green Road in Austin.

In October, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced the company would move to Austin from California.

Building continues on the company’s $1.1 billion Gigafactory that will produce the Model Y electric SUVs as well as the Cybertruck. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The factory is expected to employ 5,000 people with annual wages starting at $35,000.

"This is not a matter of Tesla leaving California as our intention is to actually increase output from Fremont and from Nevada by 50%," Musk said in the October announcement. "It's tough for people to afford houses, and a lot of people have to come in from far away. And so it's we're taking it as far as possible, but there's a limit to how big you can scale in the Bay Area."

Tesla's latest factory and headquarters isn't the only project Musk has under his belt in the Austin area. The Boring Company is developing properties in both Pflugerville and Bastrop, and Neuralink also recently posted jobs in the area.

Austin Mayor Steve Adler told KVUE Tesla "fits right in." He said the move will create the manufacturing, middle-skill jobs Austin needs.

"We welcome Tesla home," Adler said. "It is, it belongs here. It is a tech company."

He said he expects Musk to help Austin face some of its challenges ahead, including building housing around the factory in southeast Austin. In July, Tesla launched a project to build a sustainable solar community.
