Teen shaves head in support of friend beating cancer

In support of her friend with cancer, a Pflugerville teen shaved her head alongside hundreds of others.

A Williamson County teenager is giving a priceless gift to her friend in a huge show of support.

Abbie Terry, 14, lives in Pflugerville, and met Lauren Prendeville, 14, of Round Rock at church a few years ago. Lauren was recently diagnosed with cancer after she collapsed.

"I had an eight-pound tumor in my stomach,” said Prendeville.

Because of the chemotherapy, Lauren would lose her hair.

"She had this really long brown beautiful hair, and it was really sad,” said Terry of Lauren's diagnosis.

In a show of support, Abbie shaved her head alongside hundreds of others at a Saint Baldrick’s event.

"There was just something about it, it made me so happy. and seeing Lauren be so happy, it was great,” said Terry.

"It was amazing how she voluntarily gave up her hair too,” said Prendeville.

"Some people have to go through this for years, and they don't have hair for so long, and being able to give them hair while yours is growing back, it's really cool,” said Terry.

The community has rallied for Lauren, including her coach, Jodi Choate.

"We thought well we can fight cancer alongside her,” said Choate.

Fellow students and teachers brought Lauren Strong shirts, raising $11,000 dollars in just 30 days for Relay for Life, which benefits the American Cancer Society.

Lauren had a series of tests just last week that all came back with good results. She'll still have two years of scans and blood work but overall has a positive prognosis.

"I'm like unofficially, officially cancer free,” said Prendeville.

Lauren’s friends and family will hold a fun run to raise money for Team Lauren Strong. That event will be at the Ridgeview Middle School track 5:30-7:30 p.m. on May 20.
