Take This Job: The ins and outs of building a fence with Austex Fence & Deck

In this Take This Job episode, Daybreak Anchor Yvonne Nava helps boost the privacy of a home in Northeast Austin by building a fence.

Robert Frost once wrote that "good fences make good neighbors" and the fine folks at Austex Fence and Deck can certainly attest to that.

Their crews keep busy year round and invited me along on one of their home projects in Northeast Austin.

David Lockett owns Austex Fence & Deck, and he was joined by Randy and Brad to finish up a home fence.

We started off by grabbing some pickets and carrying it from the truck to the backyard.

It was a heavy load. I thought if I could get this job done without any casualties, I would consider it a success.

"Can this be done in a day? Yes. Well not with me on board. Well, once you get the hang of it," Lockett and I joked.

Between the saw horse and the nail gun, all of the fencing ammo was quite foreign to me.

There were a few hiccups on my end but I was just a beginner.

Thankfully, there weren't any injuries while I was there.

It's clear that making fences takes a lot of teamwork to make sure it's done right.

Austex Fence and Deck said it's pretty standard to build around 200 fences a week for them.

I learned how to saw wood and space the pickets.

I also learned a little about the type of wood that's preferred. In most cases, it's cedar because it's more resistant to warping.
