KVUE Profiles: Fierce Whiskers Distillery

It's one of the few AAPI-owned whiskey distilleries in the U.S. And the team is determined to show that premium whiskey can be made right here in Austin.

AUSTIN, Texas — As part of KVUE's celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, we visited Fierce Whiskers Distillery, a new whiskey distillery started by two old high school friends.

“Tim and I met in high school ... we’ve been working together ever since,” said Tri Vo, co-founder of Fierce Whiskers Distillery. “We chose to make whiskey really just because we thought it was cool.”

The name of the distillery came from an old quote by 19th President Rutherford B. Hayes. He considered Austin to be an “inconsiderable village” and Austinites “fierce whiskers.”

“We really gravitated to that because we know that it may be uncommon to make whiskey outside of Kentucky or Tennessee. We’re doing something different,” Vo said. “But we’re going to be doing our thing, trying our best and finding our way.”

Fierce Whiskers is a new distillery in South Austin. The team bottles their own whiskey and they hope to sell it in the next few years.

In the meantime, they’re serving guests delicious cocktails and mocktails and hoping they’ll change people’s perspective when they think of whiskey.

“Our goal is pretty simple: We want to be what the world thinks of when they think of Texas whiskey,” Vo said.
