AUSTIN, Texas — Editor's note: The above video is related to the Austin City Limits Music Festival.
According to her Twitter, every night before she plays the "Alaska" acoustic encore, Rogers gives a vulnerable speech about gratitude, growth and change. But in the middle of her speech Friday night, a man yelled, "Take your top off!" Then another joined in, yelling, "You cute, though."
Rogers tweeted that the incident stunned her and made her angry, confused and upset.
"I step on stage every night and give every part of me. And my community shows up every night and together, we create a safe space to amplify each other. To allow relief. To allow release. There's a deep amount of trust there," Rogers said. "I want to use this moment to be very, very clear. There is no space for harassment or disrespect or degradation of any kind at my show."
Rogers signed off the statement, "Be kind to each other out there."
Austinite Dianni Ortegon, who was at Rogers' show, said before the incident the crowd was rowdy but the energy was light – "like one big dance party." Then Rogers came out for the "Alaska" encore with just her guitar. She started talking about how she had been on tour for a couple of years, how the Friday show was her second to last of her tour and how grateful she was to her fans. That's when the men yelled out.
"Everyone was silent. I remember turning around and looking at my roommate and just being stunned. The energy in the room completely shifted," Ortegon said. "Maggie took a step back away from the microphone and when she came back to speak, she said she felt really uncomfortable."
Rogers then spoke about how her shows are a safe space and about the energy she puts into them.
"She spoke with such power and passion," Ortegon said. "I remember feeling so shocked the rest of the walk home. My roommate and I were just stunned. It makes me really sad that she experienced such a terrible time here in Austin."
Another fan posted on the Austin subreddit about the incident, saying that they were "bummed" and that they felt very bad that "a really special and talented performer came to Austin and her takeaway experience was being sexually harassed on stage."
Many responded to the Reddit post asking what theater staff did to respond to the incident and if the men who yelled were removed from the venue. KVUE has reached out to ACL Live about the incident. This story will be updated if we receive a response.
Rogers played a second show at ACL Live on Saturday.
