AUSTIN, Texas — Wednesday marks 18 years since the 9/11 attacks in the U.S.
There are a number of events being held around Central Texas to honor those who lost their lives in the terrible tragedy.
Here are some of the events:
The Austin Firefighters Association held their annual memorial to remember the victims of 9/11 at 7:30 a.m. at Buford Fire Tower on Lady Bird Lake at Cesar Chavez Street and Congress Avenue, directly across from Austin City Hall. Various City dignitaries were present.
The 2019 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb started at 7:46 a.m. at Hill Country Galleria's Parking Garage A, the garage nearest to the Dillard's. The public was welcome to attend to support the Bee Cave police, Lakeway police and Lake Travis Fire and Rescue teams.
Greater Austin Crime Commission's memorial service
The Greater Austin Crime Commission hosted its annual memorial service honoring Central Texas first responders at the Austin Club at 110 E. Ninth St. starting at 8 a.m. More than 200 business, community, government and law enforcement leaders attended, including Police Chief Brian Manley, Mayor Steve Adler and members of the Texas House of Representatives.
Austin firefighters climbed the Pleasant Valley Drill Tower at 517 S. Pleasant Valley Rd. in full turnout gear, an air pack and a hose bundle. The climb was done in complete silence and took about an hour. It started at 9:30 a.m.
Governor Greg Abbott honored first responders at the 2019 Star of Texas Awards at the Capitol starting at 10:30 a.m. One of this year's Star of Texas Award recipients was Fayette County Deputy "CJ" Lehmann, who was shot in the face in the line of duty last fall.
H-E-B Helping Heroes photo op
There was a photo opportunity at AFD Station 5 at 1201 Webbville Road at 11 a.m.
The Emergency Service Pipes and Drums Association played in the Capitol Rotunda starting at 12 p.m.
Logan's Roadhouse first responders event
Logan's Roadhouse will be offering a free American Roadhouse Meal to all first responders from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
The Taylor Fire Department will be hosting a Patriot Day observance. TFD will conduct a memorial march starting at 7 p.m. with a Patriot Day program to follow at Heritage Square.
There will be an event in Kyle at the Performing Arts Center at 979 Kohlers Crossing. The event starts at 7 p.m., but food will be served from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be Army SFC Larry "Scott" Teakell, who is a recipient of the Soldier's Medal, the highest medal you can earn in non-combat.
Austin Bold FC and H-E-B are partnering to host First Responders Night at the home game against the Sacramento Republic FC. The first 500 first responders, along with a guest, will receive free admission. The game starts at 7:30 at Circuit of the Americas.
