AUSTIN, Texas — Mike Marut joins the KVUE team after three years in Medford, Oregon – the hidden gem of the pacific northwest, in his opinion.
Growing up outside Chicago, he loves city living, but also enjoys time in the outdoors hiking, going to lakes and rivers.
Previously, Mike worked at WBOY in Clarksburg, West Virginia, as an intern/part-time reporter. He then moved to KTVL in Medford as a reporter/morning anchor. Waking up at 3:00 in the morning isn’t as fun as it sounds … and it doesn’t sound fun to begin with. Either way, he’s pumped to join KVUE as a multi-skilled journalist and reporter in a city once again, but he will definitely miss the green wine country of southern Oregon.
Mike grew up outside Chicago, went to school just outside the city at Northwestern University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in journalism with a broadcast focus. It was through that degree that he went to West Virginia prior to graduating. Through school, his time in Clarksburg and Medford, and various trainings and workshops, Mike likes to show people’s stories rather than just tell them using video, photos and especially social media (make sure to connect even on LinkedIn!).
He's most excited to move to Austin to be near a city and try all the different locally owned businesses around. On days off, you can find Mike doing touristy things around town (even when he’s no longer a tourist), trying new restaurants or cooking at home.
He and his fiancée both enjoy cooking different meals and try to reuse and recycle as much as possible. For example, they use a juicer to make their own nut milk, then dry the pulp from the ground nuts into nut flour while using the milk for cereal, different baked goods, etc. instead of using cow’s milk; the flour then gets used to make cookies, brownies, pancakes and waffles. They also have a sourdough starter at home, so if anybody has suggestions on sourdough creations, definitely reach out!
