Austin's Coldest Day

Austin's Coldest Day - Jan. 31, 1949

The attached photos of my grandmother were taken on January 31, 1949. As I understand it, the temperature that day was a record low for Austin: -2ºF. My grandmother, Jean Sellstrom, lived in South Austin and worked downtown at the Federal Courthouse. Because of the snow and ice, the buses were not running, and so she was one of many Austinites who made the long walk to work that day.

My grandmother has saved these photos for 61 years, and asked that I share them. I hope that you find them as valuable as we do!
