Baby Bluejay and cat

The Unusual Animal Family

The baby bluejay (we have named Bernie) came our attention about 5 days ago after we believe falling from a nest and were alerted by a ruckus of noise in the yard. We went to find a set of adult bluebirds dive bombing our cat only to find them protecting the bird in an alternate part of the yard. He is too young to fly more than a few yards and have tried placing in a lower nest in alternate part of the yard for him to only jump ship immediately. So in thinking of what we should do it was our 2 year old who suggested we place him in our inflatable pool to house him (only after her 1st thoughts of wanting to put him in her crib). Over the past 5 days we have built some rapport with the little guy and has allowed me to provide him some water from a plant watering pot as if I was a parent feeding him and eventually once placing my hand in front of him to perch on my hand for a few photos (pic 3). Well today as I was walking the yard and plugging some holes around the fence I guess the dog or our girls startled the bird enough for a short flight for me to turn around and to my (and probably his) surprise to see he had landed on the cats back who was walking along. I immediately sent our oldest daughter into the house in a "grab mom and camera" scramble mode. I can only assume that the shock of sitting on the cats back, 2 little girls running around screaming, and someone snapping pictures allowed him to stay put long enough for us to get a few shots. His flight skills are improving by the day and parents are making regular trips for feedings and they pay special attention to all these additional "things" doting over their baby.
