Hiking in the Barton Creek greenbelt around 11am today, I found a bunch of these very cool ice-sculptures created by the expansion and subsequent freezing of water from within the stalks of a particular plant (the species of which is a mystery to me). My dog destroyed a couple with some well-placed urine, but there were plenty more to observe, some of them forming very flower-like structures. Perturbation by hand uncovered a surprising quantity of (frozen) water within the fragile structures, contrary to my initial estimation that they were composed overwhelmingly of air.
