Multi-Agency Resource Center opens at Austin shelter for Harvey evacuees

KVUE is getting its first look at the "Multi-Agency Resource Center" -- known as MARC -- that just opened at the MetCenter in Austin to support Harvey evacuees.

AUSTIN - This week the Multi-Agency Resource Center (known as MARC) opened for Harvey evacuees. It's located at the MetCenter Shelter in Austin off Metropolis Drive.

The MARC is open to people staying in the shelter, as well as any others displaced by Hurricane Harvey.

Along with the City of Austin and Travis County, dozens of agencies have come together to offer help in one place for everything survivors will need in the coming days, weeks and months. Evacuees can get help with things like mental health services, vital records, medication and even job placement.

Stephanie Myers is one of dozens who have come in for services so far.

"It took me some days to even realize what happened," she recalled about the days after flooding destroyed her home. "I was brushing my teeth in the mirror, and it hit me. Like, 'Oh my God. I've kind of lost everything. I have to start my life over.'"

But Myers has found some good in all the heartbreak.

"You find out that people are there to help you," she explained. "You try in your life to help others and to do right. Then this happens and in a spit second everything is gone. But then everyone is outpouring and it's just, it's very heartfelt."

Myers still hasn't been able to get into her home as they wait for floodwaters to recede. She lived in Orange County, with her family spread throughout Port Arthur and Houston. But Myers believes she and her daughter will now call Austin home.

There are six other recovery centers similar to the one in Austin in hard hit areas around the state including Houston, Victoria and La Grange. To find the center nearest you, go to FEMA.gov.

FEMA has six other recovery centers located in Houston, Victoria, La Grange, Port Lavaca, Columbus and Edna. To find the center nearest you, go to FEMA.gov.

Officials at the MARC tell KVUE it's open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. They also anticipate staying open as long as the need is there.
