TRAVIS COUNTY -- Fire crews are battling a fire in Southeast Travis County.

Officials say heavy winds ignited the fire in compost piles at Hornsby Bend Biosolids Management Plant off SH 130 and FM 973, south of Manor.

Experts say solid matter that is turned into wastewater is then turned into compost. It was these compost piles that ignited Monday because of the high winds.

Fire crews say near-50 mph wind gusts ignited flames in those piles, but the fire is controlled.

The fire has not spread outside of the wastewater treatment plant. AFD crews are working to stop the flames from spreading past the plant and into a nearby field.
