WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas -- Williamson County Sheriff's Office has arrested a man accused of trafficking over $1 million worth of drugs.
"I'm sure today there is a drug lord somewhere very upset that the Williamson County Sheriff's Office is in possession of his narcotics. Which, that's a bad day for him and a great day for us," said Sergeant John Foster.
Wednesday morning a sheriff's deputy pulled a Chevy Tahoe over on I-35 north near Jarell for speeding and having a center brake light that wasn't working. Inside was 29-year old Heriberto Madrid, his wife and their one year child. Investigators say the couple told the deputy there were driving from Laredo to Dallas to go ice skating.
"I don't believe we found any ice skates in the vehicle," said Sgt. Foster.
Foster said the couple's nervous behavior prompted the deputy to get Madrid out of the SUV.
The deputy went back to the vehicle and asked Madrid's wife, Hilda, if everything in the vehicle belonged to her. She said no and “only her purse was hers.” When asked if there was anything illegal, including drugs, in the car, she said "not that she knew of.”
That's when the deputy went back to Madrid. Deputies say initially Madrid denied having drugs in the car, but when asked again, he pointed to two black duffel bags.
"Have you ever caught a child getting candy," said Foster. "You know 'did you get candy? No I didn't get candy.' You ask again, 'where's the candy?' They say right here in my pocket."
Inside the bags were about $1 million worth of crystal methamphetamine, a total of 90 pounds divided into 30 bundles. Plus a 28 pound brick of marijuana worth $20,000.
Foster said the meth is wrapped in about seven layers of materials and was washed, a process that makes it white. It's also a sign that the drugs are likely from Mexico.
"Interstate 35 serves as a major corridor for the drug trafficking business coming out of Mexico. We don't have very much doubt that this is coming out of Mexico," added Foster.
Madrid, who is from Laredo, is facing federal charges of drug trafficking. His wife was released from custody and their one year old child is now in the custody of another family member.
