AUSTIN -- The Architects of Air were back in Austin for a second year with a display at the Palmer Events Center last week. It was a chance to enjoy intricate tunnels of radiant light and color.

From the outside, it looks like something out of a sci-fi movie: 50y yards of plastic standing three stories high.

But walk inside, and it is a sculpture of light, color and air called an illuminarium sculpture.

Built in Nottingham, England by the Architects of Air, this particular exhibit is named EXXOPOLIS. And each person who walks, crawls or lies inside senses something different.

"This room reminds me of a church because it has the stained glass," said visitor Felicia Montgomery.

"It's almost like you're in a toy," said Jake Martin.

It took 55 people six months to construct by hand, and the structure will only last four months. Which is why people are willing to wait hours for a chance to come inside.

"Well, we came yesterday and it was a three and a half hour wait and we came at five and they'd already closed it down. So we woke up early this morning, got the breakfast tacos and we were like the second ones in line," said Montgomery.

"I came back and actually got here so early that I actually got a time lapse of them building, of them blowing it up," said Martin.

It takes just 20 minutes to inflate the entire masterpiece thanks to eight fans. And the people who come inside say it is an experience they will never forget.

"The cool sounds. It's all alien-like. Like you've been abducted," said visitor Devin Parker.

"I heard a comparison of being in the womb. It is kind of like you're in the body, going down passages like you would imagine veins of something," said Martin.

Whatever you see, feel, or hear, it's a combination of color, air, and sound that lets your imagination run wild.

Sunday was the exhibit's last day, but the Architects of Air plan to return to Austin next year. If you don't want to wait that long, you can take a trip to Houston. EXXOPOLIS will be on display there from April 28 until May 5.
