TRAVIS COUNTY -- A family in Steiner Ranch is talking about an unpleasant surprise -- a racial slur left on their walkway.

The Sanders family says they wanted to talk about the incident publicly to try and make sure it won't happen again.

Thelma Sanders and her family say their gated neighborhood has always been welcoming, but on Sunday morning she and her husband arrived home to find a racial slur written on the walkway at their front door.

“We've been in Steiner Ranch going on three years now,” said Sanders said. “It was very upsetting, very shocking because we've not had any issues with anyone or any problems. To come home and see that was very disturbing.”

A week before that, Sanders says someone caused damage to their property.

“All our landscaping lights were pulled up from the ground, completely pulled up and torn from the ground,” she said.

These events, along with a package that disappeared from their doorstep, has her worried and hoping things don't escalate.

The Sanders reported the incident to the Travis County Sheriff's Office. Investigators say they are looking into the case, but Sanders thinks she knows who may be to blame.

“It may be children who are completely out of control,” she said.

No matter who it is, Sanders and her family want it to stop.

“We pay to live here just like they do. We would like to feel at this point that we are safe in our neighborhood,” she said.  “This needs to stop now.”

Travis County investigators say if caught, those who pulled up the lights and wrote the racial slur could be charged with criminal mischief and face a hefty fine.

The Steiner Ranch Homeowners Association told KVUE News it has not heard of incidents like this happening in the neighborhood before, and that it's obviously not acceptable.
