AUSTIN -- An investigation shows twice as many Texas Army National Guard soldiers are dying from suicide than in combat.

KVUE's exclusive news partner The Austin American-Statesman found 30 suicides among Texas National Guardsman since 2001.

The majority happened in the last five years. That's the second highest level in the country, with Texas trailing only Minnesota.

Veterans advocates say the duties of National Guard soldiers at home make it more difficult to get mental health care.
