AUSTIN -- Austin police say 26-year-old Matthew Bacon murdered 36-year-old David Villarreal. According to an arrest affidavit, Bacon beat him over the head with a hammer, then slit his throat.
Investigators say Bacon admitted he wanted to steal electronics from Villarreal.
The gruesome death has left friends asking "why," but detectives now have a clue.
"Bacon told us his mind had been telling him he wanted to kill someone for a while. When the opportunity presented itself, he took that opportunity," said APD Sgt. Brian Miller.
It took 20 hours to process the crime scene. By comparison, a typical murder scene takes six to eight.
"I felt sick that someone would do that to another human being and take someone as good as David for as little as they took," said Bradley Barmer, Villarreal's friend.
Villarreal met Bacon at Rain on 4th Street. They had some drinks then went back to Villarreal's condo. Bacon stole his credit card and booked into a hotel in Belton. From there, police traced Bacon to Louisiana where he was being held in jail on drug charges.
Bacon admitted to police he had the murder weapons in his car. His bond is set at $500,000.
"He was almost apologetic. I think he was still trying to get it clear in his mind to try and figure why he did what he did," said Miller.
Detectives say they are gathering evidence and tying up loose ends to prepare the case for prosecution. They don't know when Bacon will be extradited to Austin.
