AUSTIN --  Police have released the name of the driver arrested after a hit and run accident. APD says the driver hit a bicyclist but never stopped to help.

Truett D. Jones, 25, was arrested after the accident took place at 4:30 a.m. on Guadalupe Street near West 17th Street.

Police found the injured cyclist on the road. They tracked the bike and Jones' SUV down the street several blocks away. Officers say the bike got lodged under the SUV in the crash and was dragged along the road until it came loose.

Police shut down several downtown blocks to investigate. Officers say after hitting the cyclist, Jones continued going south on Guadalupe to West 15th Street. The driver then turned on West 15th and continued westbound to West Avenue.

At West Avenue police say the bike came loose. They found the mangled metal in the intersection. Officers continued following tire marks along the road a couple of blocks north on West Avenue to West 17th Street. Nearly a block further west, officers found the damaged SUV parked on the side of the road. Jones was still inside. Police say he had been drinking.

“He was arrested [and] taken into custody. He has also been booked into the Travis County Jail on charges of intoxication assault and failure to stop and render aid. Additional charges could be filed at a later time as the investigation unfolds,” explained APD Sgt. David McDonald.

The charges filed against Jones are third degree felonies. He has since been charged with leaving the scene of a crash, which is a class B misdemeanor.

Sgt. McDonald said paramedics rushed the injured cyclist to the hospital with serious injuries.

Officers believe Jones also hit a parked car around the same time he hit the cyclist. They found the damaged car near the cyclist on Guadalupe Street. The impact of the crash knocked a tire off the SUV, but it didn't slow Jones down until he got several blocks away.

APD did not immediately release the names of either the cyclist. Police are asking any witnesses to call 974-5789.
