BASTROP COUNTY, Texas -- The Department of Public Safety confirms that one person has died in an accident north of Elgin.
The incident happened Thursday around 7 a.m. on Highway 95 near County Road 87.
DPS Trooper Robbie Barrera says Gregory Robinson, 22, of Elgin, was heading home after work when he attempted to drive on the shoulder of the southbound lane to pass an 18-wheeler.
Barrera says Robinson lost control of his Dodge Stratus when he moved back in front of the truck. Robinson crossed into the northbound lane as another 18-wheeler was approaching.
Both drivers moved to avoid colliding. Barrera says the truck still hit Robinson's Dodge. The 18-wheeler rolled onto its side in the impact.
Robinson's Dodge burst into flames and got pushed back into the southbound lane in front of the other 18-wheeler.
Robinson died immediately.
“I'm very careful on this road because it can surprise you. It can be very dangerous. We need to be careful and not be complacent. Every trip has potential hazards. We need to be careful,” said Elgin resident Eric Carlson.
Both semi truck drivers are said to be shaken but unharmed.
Troopers call the crash a tragic result of driver inattention or impatience. Traffic in both directions on Highway 95 was detoured. All lanes were closed for a while Thursday.
