AUSTIN -- Travis County Sheriff's deputies have arrested a man they say stole a tow truck.

Roger Wade with the Travis County Sheriff's Office says deputies followed the suspect in the stolen wrecker into a parking lot near the Academy store at 12400 Research Boulevard in Northwest Austin Wednesday morning.

When the suspect started backing up toward deputies, they fired a shot at the tire of the vehicle. The driver then put the tow truck in drive, hitting a fence and other objects before jumping out and running away.

Deputies searched the area for the suspect and eventually found him. He was then placed under arrest.

"[He] stopped the vehicle in the parking lot behind me. When he was cornered he threw the vehicle in reverse, tried to run over a deputy, the deputy fired a shot at the tires, he ran into a fence then took off on foot," Wade said.

Deputies have not released the suspect's name. An internal review will begin as the deputy who fired shots is placed under administrative leave.
