ROUND ROCK, Texas -- A young woman is dead after a fatal multi-vehicle accident.

It happened around 3:30 a.m. Friday in the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 near FM 1431.

Round Rock Officer Dee Carver says one crash set off a second crash. According to Carver, a passenger vehicle traveling in the outside lane hit a pickup truck hauling a trailer.

“The passenger vehicle [then] veered into the center lane and when it veered into the center lane an 18-wheeler semi collided with the passenger vehicle,” explained Carver.

The impact crushed the passenger vehicle. The driver of the 18-wheeler veered off into the grassy median, dragging the passenger vehicle along.

Police say the driver in the passenger vehicle, a white woman about 20 years old, died. Both drivers of the semi and the pick-up truck have minor injuries.

Debris was spread out across the highway, forcing police to close all southbound lanes. Drivers were backed up on the frontage road.

The highway was shut down for a few hours. It reopened just after 8 a.m.
