GEORGETOWN, Texas -- Halloween is usually a night of fun and laughter, however for one family it turned to true terror.
Georgetown father Keith Pittman and his three sons talked exclusively to KVUE a year after the boys witnessed their mother's murder.
It happened Halloween night 2011. After the children went trick-or-treating, they came home to their mother, Terry Pittman, being attacked by her ex-boyfriend, Anthony Blackmon.
Georgetown police say while their mother was being attacked, the children were locked in a back bedroom. All three of the boys and their step-sister were inside the house, trying to get help.
The oldest child, 13-year-old Malik Pittman, called 911 for help.
"It was kind of challenging because I wanted to cry. They were crying. So I kinda had to pull myself together to help them out," said Malik.
When police arrived, Pittman's boyfriend killed her. Police killed the ex-boyfriend.
The boy's father, Keith Pittman, says he and his wife had been divorced two years but remained friends, and he never imagined raising three boys on his own.
Keith says the boys have been going through counseling and play football as a positive outlet. A year after the tragedy, he shared a message of hope to others.
"You just hope for the next day to be better than the last. We have more good days than bad now," said Keith.
He is taking the boys trick-or-treating Wednesday night. The youngest plans to be a ninja.
