AUSTIN -- Family and friends have said their final farewell to a fallen Lakeway police officer.

Sergeant Chris Doles died in a car crash on RR 620 last Thursday. On Monday the community gathered at Hill County Bible Church on that very same road to pay their respects.

The church became packed with people from across Central Texas. Those in attendance included some 400 law enforcement officers from a dozen agencies including Austin, Georgetown and Sunset Valley. There were also officials with the Travis County Sheriff’s Office and Williamson County Constable's Office.

“We're a family here in Central Texas,” said APD Assistant Chief Steve Deaton. “When something like this happens, it really is a blow to all of us.”

Sgt. Doles, 47, dedicated his life to protecting the community. He served in numerous communities, including 20 years at the Waco Police Department, before joining the Lakeway PD two years ago.

"He embodied the road warrior. He knew what it was to fight the fight. He knew what it meant to serve the public," said Lakeway police chief Todd Radford.

Following his funeral service at church, police escorted the procession to Doles' grave site at Cook Walden-Capital Parks off Interstate 35 in Austin.

"It encourages one another, and shows everyone they are not alone in times like this," said Travis County Sheriff's Office sergeant Stan Roper.

Sgt. Doles leaves behind a wife and four children and a granddaughter. The Lakeway Police Foundation has established a fund for Doles' family. To make a donation go here.

You can also write a check made out to "Lakeway Police Foundation" and drop it off at the Lakeway Police Department at 104 Cross Creek, Lakeway, Texas.
