AUSTIN -- Police are investigating a fatal auto-pedestrian accident in South Austin.
It happened just after 2 a.m. Sunday in the 5800 block of South First Street near West Stassney Lane.
Police say 47-year-old Reynaldo Lucio was hit and killed by a vehicle before the vehicle left the scene. Witnesses driving by at the time told officials the victim was staggering along the sidewalk when he fell into the street.
Family members beleive their uncle may have been drinking. When he fell into the street, a car struck him and kept driving.
Family members contacted KVUE asking for help from the public and an outcry to the person responsible.
"If anybody's seen him or if you're the one that hit him, please come forward and say 'sorry.' Say that you're not a murderer and that it was an accident. He means a lot to us. He has a lot of loved ones, " said Monica Escobedo talking about her uncle, Lucio.
Family members say their uncle would come to neighborhood bars on a regular basis and then walk home. That's what they believe he was doing the night he died.
"This hurts. This hurts a lot -- to know they left him in the cold. It was real cold that night. They just left him in the cold. He just laid in the street, and he died in the cold. That was a very uncomfortable way for someone to pass away," Escobedo said.
Now a family searching for answers is struggling to scrape up money for a funeral as Austin police investigate yet another hit-and-run fatal accident.
Police say this is the 28th pedestrian-related death so far this year. If you have any information about this accident, you're asked to call Crime Stoppers at 472-TIPS.
