AUSTIN --- South Lamar between Barton Springs and Ben White is considered by some locals to be an area of Austin unaffected by change. That sentiment is slowly changing with signs of progress along pockets on the busy street.
The Broken Spoke in the 3300 block of South Lamar boasts of being the oldest structure on that part of the strip, but even Broken Spoke is now being bookended by development on both sides.
James White, the Broken Spoke owner told KVUE News Wednesday that half of all of his parking is now gone, and that is having an impact on business.
White also said that a developer building one of two apartment complexes on either side of the Broken Spoke is paying for valet parking, which White said is helping a bit.
When it’s all said and done there are expected to be 350 units combined in the two complexes going up next to the Broken Spoke.
White tried to keep a positive tone when talking to KVUE about the development squeezing his business when he said that it’s a chance to gain new clients who might not have ever come to the Broken Spoke.
November 2013 is when White is expecting to have fewer parking problems after a parking garage and parking lot both open for business then.
