AUSTIN -- Austin Energy crews are at Zilker Park installing the famous Zilker Tree.

It’s not an easy task. It takes a number of crews and a crane to install the 155-foot-tall tree around the park's moonlight tower.

Friday morning crews began stretching out the 39 strands of lights that make up the tree. Each string holds 81 multi-colored-bulbs. In its entirety, the tree lights up with 3,309 bulbs. At the top are two bright, white stars stretching out 10 feet from tip to tip.

The bulbs are carefully placed in a pattern to create a spiral effect. It’s a tradition in Austin to walk inside the tree and twirl.

It will officially light up on Dec. 2 and is back on every night of December from 6:00 p.m. until midnight.

This year’s tree marks the start of several Austin holiday traditions. The popular Trail of Lights is coming back. Funding cuts forced the City to cancel the trail last year. The year before, it hosted a smaller version of the event.
