AUSTIN – After more than 250 car crashes between 7 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. Friday, local body shops are gearing up for a 20 to 30 percent increase in business over the next few days.
However, there is one common mistake body shop experts say that crash victims make in times like these.
“Most people think in order for them to make a claim with their insurance company, they have to go run out and get two or three estimates before they call their insurance, and that is the absolute opposite of what they should do,” said Kim Bishop with Ellis and Salazar Body Shop in north Austin.
Bishop said people should talk to their insurance companies first, make their claim and then follow the insurance company’s instructions on where they need to go to get a written estimate.
“If the insurance company makes them go to shop 'X', [it] doesn't mean that they have to get their work done there, but they need to get the estimate written there, and then take that estimate to the shop of their choice. If they're running around getting estimates without their insurance involved, they're just wasting time, and it won't mean anything in the process,” said Bishop.
Monday, Jan. 27 is expected to be one of the busiest days for local body shops due to the recent winter weather.
