BASTROP COUNTY, Texas -- A Bastrop County Commissioner was arrested Tuesday night for driving while intoxicated after driving off the road and into several fences.
Torri Lail was inside the house when he heard a loud crash.
“He was parked up over here on top of the water troughs and they're all dented in on the other side," Lail said.
A family member inside the home called 911. While waiting for police to arrive, Lail said John Klaus tried to get back into his truck and drive off.
"I ran and jumped over the fence real fast, then jumped into the truck to take the keys out of the ignition,” Lail said.
The Bastrop Sheriff’s deputy who responded to the scene wrote this in the arrest affidavit obtained by KVUE:
“I immediately noticed that the driver had red and watery eyes. I then observed two, 12-ounce cans that displayed ‘Natural Light Beer’ on the floorboard of the vehicle.”
Commissioner Klaus was arrested for driving while intoxicated and then released Wednesday morning on a personal recognizance bond.
“I'm personally thankful that no one was injured, and just want to remind people that there are consequences for choices we make," Bastrop County Judge Paul Pape told KVUE.
Pape said they’ll continue to support a man who has served as commissioner for nearly a decade.
Klaus will remain a Bastrop County Commissioner for the time being.
