AUSTIN -- Southbound Interstate 35 is now open after being closed for nearly eight hours. On Monday an 18-wheeler went up in flames shutting down I-35 between Riverside and Oltorf.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, the tractor trailer had been carrying pork bellies. Crews say the truck was engulfed when they arrived.
Fire, police and TxDOT crews cleared the wreckage and had to do emergency repairs on I-35 before opening it back up.
The fire appears to have been caused by a mechanical malfunction.
At some point, the fire spread through the grass near the access road, and nearby employees who work along the interstate tell KVUE they were concerned they would have to evacuate.
According to the Austin Fire Department, one of the truck driver's two dogs was killed in the fire, but no one was injured.
TxDOT reopened I-35 just before 8:30 p.m. Monday.
