AUSTIN -- Like most big Austin events, it started with live music. However, the Easter service at the Erwin Events Center set itself apart with the message.
“By the time they leave today, they'll know that it was God who drew their hearts to come,” said Dr. Devin Garza, an elder at Austin Stone.
Garza is one of a thousand church volunteers who spent their Sunday giving back to the Austin community.
“We call ourselves a church for the city, not just a church in the city,” said Garza.
"It's an honor, and a gift to be able to serve in this capacity,” volunteer George Washington III told KVUE News.
As visitors made their way into the Erwin Center Sunday, they were also reminded that Easter service is about giving back.
“We're asking everybody who comes, or knew they were coming, to bring a gift certificate for the families that are helping to take care of those kids that are in foster care,” Garza said.
Austin Stone hopes to raise $100,000 in gift cards for local foster families.
