HOUSTON -- The Houston Zoo’s Asian Elephant herd includes seven elephants:

  • Thai, the adult male
  • three adult females, Me-Thai, Shanti, and Tess
  • Tucker, Tess’s 'teenage' calf
  • Baylor, Shanti’s male calf
  • Tupelo, Tess’s female calf.

Elephants are highly intelligent, so the keepers give them engaged with a variety of training, toys, and treats that allow for physical and mental choices and challenges.

These majestic creatures are struggling to survive in the wild: there are less than 50,000 wild Asian elephants.

The Houston Zoo is home to 6,000 permanent residents.
