AUSTIN – Man’s best friend will have an opportunity this weekend to pair up with forever homes thanks to a program that targets senior animals.
The free program Hot Summer/Cool Seniors runs from August 24 through August 25, this Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4:00 p.m.
City of Austin officials say it is part of national Senior Citizens Day.
The free pooches, ages seven and older, can be adopted at the Austin Animal Center, located at 7201 Levander Loop in East Austin. There will also be dogs available at the Town Lake Animal Center in the city’s overflow kennels, located at 1156 W. Cesar Chavez St.
Animal shelter officials point out that adding a senior dog to your home has many advantages. They are housetrained, don’t chew up your things, often know commands, and enjoy an easy lifestyle.
All dogs adopted will include spay or neuter surgery, a microchip and vaccinations – a package valued at more than $200.
Between Austin Pets Alive! and Classic Canines of Austin, the two shelters will provide more than 50 "senior" dogs ready for adoption.
For more information on adoptions visit the Austin Animal Center website where you can also find pictures of the dogs.
