AUSTIN -- A small group of dogs are headed to the Humane Society because they can't stay where they are. For the first time, the Austin Animal Center is not accepting surrenders from owners.
Organizers say the shelter is over capacity.
There are more than 1,000 dogs and cats available for adoption. You can see them on the shelter's website.
The center took in 1,920 pets in May. Of those, 419 were brought in by their owners. Nearly 1,400 were strays.
More than 100 animals were euthanized, including 57 cats and 49 dogs.
This weekend the shelter is offering extended hours for adoptions or foster homes. All the animal adoption locations are waiving the adoption fees. That includes the microchip and the vaccinations, a $200 value.
