HOUSTON, Texas -- Twitter could be preparing to unveil a music app by the end of the month, if a source close to the development of the service is correct.
The app is rumored to be called Twitter Music. It’s an entirely new app, outside of Twitter’s existing social media offering, but of course it will make its way into your Twitter feed.
According to a CNET report, Twitter recently bought the music service We Are Hunted, which scans the Web for trending music. The social network is expected to use this technology on Twitter Music, showing you trending music as well as songs your friends are listing to.
If someone uses #NowPlaying, and you’re following them, then that song will end up your Twitter Music app too.
You can choose to stream the song with a play button in your feed, or you can download it to your device via iTunes.
Right now it sounds like the first Twitter Music app will only work on the iPad/iPhone, but Android probably won’t be far behind. Twitter knows it needs to compete in the music market since Facebook recently revamped its music section, and Pandora and Spotify already have millions of users.
