AUSTIN -- The end of the year can be a good time for local charities and the people making donations. Monday is the last day to get a receipt for a tax deduction for 2012.

Whether it's outside at its donation station or inside its store, Goodwill Industries of Central Texas in West Austin has been busy at year's end.

"We've had a lot of our customers bring their donations because of the holidays," said Claudia Fernandez with Goodwill Industries of Central Texas. "It's starting to pick up a little bit more because of the coming new year."

"We average about 120 to 130 donations a day," said Jason Cole, with Goodwill Industries. "For the last couple of weeks it's been more around 200."

Part of the reason for the late rush in donations is because December 31 not only marks the end of 2012; it's also the last day to get a tax deduction for the year.

"Obviously if you can get it done it does count for this year, which is great," said Austin resident Jay Vanert. "We've all got our fiscal cliff to worry about."

"Part of it is trying to get rid of things that we don't need and do something for other people," said Austin resident Kelly Walton. "At the same time, in the back of my mind I always think I know I'm going to be gathering my receipts for tax time in a month or so. This is a good time to do that last-minute tax refund or things, credit, whatever it is."

Everyone KVUE talked to also said as important as the tax incentive is, it's equally important to help others. It's one of the reasons Walton brought her seven-year-old son Ben to the donation station.

"When I give something to some other person I feel good about giving someone else something," said Ben.

You have until the close of the business day Monday to get a tax deduction receipt for 2012. Goodwill Industries in West Austin is open until 9 p.m.
