SAN ANTONIO -- A 19-year-old man was hospitalized late Tuesday night after crashing his car off the fifth level of a parking garage at North Star Mall in San Antonio.
San Antonio police said the teen and another driver did not go to the mall to shop. Instead, they were racing in the parking garage.
The teen busted through a concrete barrier around 10:45 p.m. and landed upside down five floors below. Police estimated the plunge to be around 49 feet.
The teen was conscious and breathing when he was rushed to University Hospital. He was only saved, police said, because he was wearing a seat belt.
Traffic investigators said they have spoken to the other driver and criminal charges are pending for both men.
Workers had to cut off a chunk of concrete that was left dangling from the fourth floor following the crash.
