AUSTIN -- Police have arrested a man for running over and killing his mother in South Austin.
Officers say they arrived at the Exxon gas station at 1222 South Lamar Boulevard just before 7 p.m. Thursday to respond to a disturbance call.
They noticed 72-year-old Virginia Samuelson in her car with injuries from a fight she had with her son and called Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services to assist.
EMS responders were transferring Samuelson from her car to an ambulance when they noticed a truck coming towards them at a high rate of speed. Officials say they jumped out of the way to avoid being hit. They tried pulling the stretcher Samuelson was on, but were not able to in time. The car hit her before hitting a police car. Virginia Samuelson was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers were able to stop the driver of the truck, her son, 45-year-old Shaun Samuelson, nearby. He was arrested and charged with murder. He is now in the Travis County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
The case remains under investigation. This is Austin's 22nd murder of the year.
