AUSTIN -- Preparations are underway for the 23rd annual HEB Feast of Sharing.
The HEB Eddie Garcia Mobile Kitchen trailer is parked outside the Palmer Events Center in South Austin. Volunteers will begin preparing the feast from inside the trailer Tuesday morning.
HEB organizes the feast and gets help from across the community, including students at several area schools. They help create the table centerpieces and decorate the center.
Austin’s Feast of Sharing is one of dozens that HEB hosts yearly. It’s grown to be one of the largest in the program. Last year the group planned to serve more than 13,000 meals in Austin’s Feast of Sharing, but Leticia Mendoza with HEB says they wound up serving 14,000 meals instead.
This year they're planning for 14,000 again, but are prepared for even more.
It takes 3,600 pounds of sliced turkey breast, 3,200 gallons of mashed potatoes and vegetable medley, 170 gallons of gravy, more than 1,000 pies and 14,000 dinner rolls and soft drinks to prepare the feast.
The event kicks off with speeches from local leaders at 3 p.m. Meals will be served between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Live entertainment and a children's area will also be available at the center.
