Parenting strategies for healthy eating

We all know the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables, exercising daily and restricting junk food, but new research shows parenting styles may also influence a child’s weight.

Telling children to clean their plates or restricting or forbidding certain foods can work against children trying to maintain a healthy weight, according to Dr. Wendy Sue Swanson, a practicing pediatrician at The Everett Clinic.

She joined KVUE's sister station KING in studio Wednesday to talk about the counter-productive effects of this type of controlling parenting when it comes to food.

Dr. Swanson shared the following highlights from the study:

  • Controlling, food-related parenting practices common
  • Food restriction common in parents to overweight teens
  • Pressure-to-eat strategies more common with normal weight teens
  • Fathers more than mothers used pressure-to-eat strategies


She also offered the following parenting tips for healthy eating:

  • Division of responsibility: parent's job is just to be buyers and purveyors of food
  • Eat meals as family, model healthy eating
  • Encourage teen autonomy with self-regulation
  • Eat when hungry, stop when full
  • Don't make kids clean the plate
