AUSTIN -- A new lab that will administer life saving tests for newborns opened in Austin Friday.
Dozens got their first look of the new "scids" lab at a ribbon cutting ceremony at the State Laboratory Building in Central Austin.
Scids is a disease that attacks the immune system of newborns. If not treated, most affected infants die within a year.
An advocate for the lab, and a mother who lost her son to the disease said other parents will now have a better opportunity to have healthy children.
"Scid" testing for newborns begins tomorrow.
