AUSTIN -- The mother of a man accused of killing an Austin Police Department officer says her son was depressed over a relationship. That's what she says drove 24-year-old Brandon Montgomery Daniel to drink alcohol, take drugs, and ultimately shoot and kill Officer Jaime Padron.
According to the Travis County Clerk, Daniel was charged in February with driving under the influence. Now he's charged with capital murder.
Last Friday at 2:30 a.m., Austin police were called to Walmart. A man was inside, intoxicated, trying to steal things. Officer Jaime Padron arrived and tackled the man -- Daniel.
"That is not my son," said Mary O'Dell, Daniel's mother.
She remembers her son when he was young and happy. That was before he became depressed over a break-up.
"There was probably a lot of emptiness from that whole thing. He's not that person, and I just want to see him. I just want to see him, and give him a hug, and just be his mother right now," said O'Dell. "I know everybody wants to hate him. I'm sorry for that. Hate continues to breed more hate. There's so much loss here."
There's one thing she'd like to tell Officer Padron's family: "It's unbelievably sad those two children will not have a father. It's incredibly sad. I understand what that does to a family. I'm so sorry," said O'Dell.
The family has hired a lawyer. Daniel remains in the Travis County Jail without bond.
O'Dell shared photos of her son during happier times with KVUE. You can see those attached to this story.
