AUSTIN -- A man has been arrested and charged with criminal mischief and burglarizing the Department of Public Safety Driver License Office on North Lamar Blvd.

Forty-year-old Kenneth James Vanlue of Austin was arrested Wednesday in connection with the Tuesday night break-in that resulted in extensive property damage. According to an arrest affidavit, Vanlue caused $9000 worth of damage to DPS vehicles in the parking lot of the North Lamar office.

Vanlue then used a brake drum to bust a door window and break into the office. Inside, he smashed up computers and other equipment and used feces to write on the wall.

Thus, the office will be closed until further notice.

Investigators don't believe that any sensitive information was compromised.

Vanlue later turned himself in to DPS troopers on the scene. He's in the Travis County Jail on $40,000 bond.

In the meantime, customers who showed up bright and early Wednesday morning at the North Lamar office left disappointed.

"I mean who on earth would want to break into a driver license office and for what," said Johnny Callahan, who just moved to Austin and was hoping to get his license.

Sam Stilley thought at first it might be the bad weather that created an empty parking lot.

"Yeah, kind of," he said. "Then I saw the tape and oh man, I kind of knew they were going to be shut down."

Customers are advised to go to the Pflugerville Mega Center because of its ability to handle increased capacity and technology that allows you to remotely get “in line.” It's located at 216 E. Wells Branch Parkway, Pflugerville, TX 78660.
