AUSTIN -- Take a handful of bands. Now put them in front of a few thousand of their most loyal fans from all over the country. Some think it's ACL ten years ago, but for these folks it's the festival so nice they named it thrice.
"It's not one's better than the other," said fest-goer Karen Morgan, "It's that they're both different."
Fun Fun Fun Fest kicked off Friday, offering exactly what the name implies.
"It's the bands, the waterfront, I mean in San Francisco we don't get that [Texas weather]," said one fester who just went by Jabal.
Nor does San Francisco have a skate park, a few yards from a metal concert, opposite a comedian.
"When we first started, we just thought it was going to be a one year thing," said fest creator James Moody.
Seven years later, Moody's creation will bring almost $6 million and 500 temporary jobs to Austin. All this, in just one weekend.
As for the rest of the month, the city has their hands full.
"We have Race for the Cure coming up, we have a couple football games," said Gordon Derr with Austin's Transportation Department.
Let's not forget to mention Formula 1's debut as well. For Austin, November's schedule poses a historic challenge.
"It's always interesting," said Derr. "We have now foreign embassies calling. They want to set up parties, so that's a new level to things we haven't done before."
When it comes to getting around town during those busy weekends the city hopes drivers keep an open eye out for QR codes that will be posted downtown. A quick scan with your phone takes you to an interactive map that shows you how to avoid traffic.
Come F1 weekend, expect specific zones for cabs driven or pedaled, plus a few more limos. As for public transit, Capital Metro is doing its part with it's own free app letting you plan your ride.
Until then, just try and enjoy this weekend's music.
As the music winds down at Auditorium Shores, it is just getting started across the river come nightfall. Scheduled night concerts are being held at venues throughout downtown. The fest runs through Sunday evening and tickets are still available.
