AUSTIN -- He was named First Team All-District for Class 5A in 2009, now 20-year-old Brelyn Sorrells is accused of stabbing and killing 20-year-old Arthur Martinez-Torres.

San Marcos police arrested the former Bowie High School football player on Wednesday. They say he attacked Martinez-Torres with a knife inside a home on Allen Street Saturday night.

The victim’s family tells KVUE they were upset Sorrells was not arrested immediately, saying he was still posting online after the attack.

“The boy who stabbed him wrote on Twitter and everybody keeps talking about it,” says Maryalice Torres, Arthur’s mother.

On Wednesday, San Marcos Police Chief Howard Williams released a statement saying:

“This investigation was complex. For the past four days all of our detectives worked on it. There were many witnesses who gave inconsistent statements about the event, and people were tampering with the evidence and with witnesses. I believe that our detectives did an exceptional job in detailing what happened that night. The investigation uncovered additional victims about whom we were not aware the night that it happened. Good investigations are about quality, not speed.”

On Twitter, friends and family of the victim used the hashtag “JusticeforArthur” to demand Sorrells’ arrest, and posted pictures of him holding a knife.

“I’m not sure if he had a regular knife or a pocket knife, but he did have a knife in his hand,” said Angel Herrera, Martinez-Torres  girlfriend and a witness to the attack Saturday.

The Torres family is receiving support through a benefit at The Whiskey Room in Downtown Austin Thursday to help cover funeral costs.
